Running head: PATHWAYS OF CONCEPTUAL CHANGE Profiles of Inconsistent Knowledge in Children’s Pathways of Conceptual Change
نویسندگان
چکیده
Conceptual change requires learners to restructure parts of their conceptual knowledge base. Prior research has identified the fragmentation and the integration of knowledge as two important component processes of knowledge restructuring but remains unclear as to their relative importance and the time of their occurrence during development. Previous studies were mostly based on the categorization of answers in interview studies and led to mixed empirical results, suggesting that methodological improvements might be helpful. We assessed 161 third-graders’ knowledge about floating and sinking of objects in liquids at three measurement points by means of multiple-choice tests. The tests assessed how strongly the children agreed with commonly found but mutually incompatible statements about floating and sinking. A latent profile transition analysis of the test scores revealed five profiles, some of which indicated the co-existence of inconsistent pieces of knowledge in learners. The majority of students (63%) were on one of seven developmental pathways between these profiles. Thus, a child’s knowledge profile at a point in time can be used to predict further development. The degree of knowledge integration decreased on some individual developmental paths, increased on others, and remained stable on still others. The study demonstrates the usefulness of explicit quantitative models of conceptual change. The results support a constructivist perspective on conceptual development, in which developmental changes of a learner’s knowledge base result from idiosyncratic, yet systematic knowledge construction processes.

متن کاملTeachers ‘professional development and conceptual change through the knowledge building environment
This study aimed to investigate conceptual change as a fruitful framework in teachers’ professional development through knowledge building environment. In cognitive approaches towards education, the quality of education is seen as a result of teachers’ actions and teachers’ action is seen as a result of their cognition. Thereby the goal of many teachers’ professional development programs is to ...
متن کاملRunning head : CONSTRUCTING A NEW THEORY MANUSCRIPT IN PRESS , COGNITIVE SCIENCE Constructing a new theory from old ideas and new evidence
A central tenet of constructivist models of conceptual development is that children’s initial conceptual level constrains how they make sense of new evidence and thus whether exposure to evidence will prompt conceptual change. Yet, little experimental evidence directly examines this claim for the case of sustained, fundamental conceptual achievements. The present study combined scaling and expe...

Although self-efficacy has been identified as important for conceptual change, other factors, such as one’s knowledge and interest, are also thought to influence self-efficacy (Linnenbrink & Pintrich, 2003) and are requisite for developing more complex representations of a domain (Murphy & Alexander, 2002). 84 undergraduate preservice teachers completed measures of domain knowledge, topic inter...

This study explores the metaphoric comprehension of normal Persian-speaking children, as well as theories of cognitive development and cultural and social impacts. The researchers discuss the improvement of the understanding of ontological conceptual metaphors through age growth and cognitive development, and how it helps to expand children’s thoughts and knowledge of the world. In this study, ...
